Commonly asked questions

Whether you are new to therapy, or you have had mixed success in the past, we at Resolute Counseling and Consulting may be able to help answer some common questions that we hear.

How do I know if therapy is what I need?

It can be difficult at times to know exactly what we need. Chances are, if you are searching for therapist, there is a pull in your heart that you need help with tackling problems in your life. It is usually a good idea to follow that intuition. If you still find yourself questioning if you need therapy ask yourself a few simple questions.

Do I currently have the tools that I need to tackle these events in my life?

Do I currently have the social support to be able to talk about my problems without fear of judgement or retribution?

If the answer to either of these questions is no then you may benefit from therapy.

I have been through through many therapist with no success. How do I know this time will be different?

One of the most important aspects of therapy is something called a therapeutic alliance. This is, simply put, the connection that you have with your therapist. For someone to be able to be successful in therapy they must know that they are safe from judgement and that their therapist is competent in their practice. Without this, it is difficult to be vulnerable enough to open up. It is also difficult to follow the advice of the therapist. As a therapist I understand that I will not connect with every client, and you must understand that you will not connect with every therapist. Sometimes it is important that we “shop around” to find a therapist that fits our needs. Sometimes it isn’t that Therapy doesn’t work for you, but instead the type of therapy you’ve received in the past didn’t work for you. A different approach and perspective can make a world of a difference.

The first session that you have will be centered around this understanding. At Resolute Counseling we offer a free initial consultation to ensure that we am a good fit for you and your current needs.

What is EMDR and can it help me?

EMDR is one of the most researched treatment methods that currently exists. It works by stimulating the left and right side of the brain through the use of various forms of Bilateral stimulation (BLS) either in the form of visual stimulation, following an object as it moves to the left and right, tactile stimulation, I utilize a handheld device that the client holds in each hand that vibrate from the left side to the right side, or through auditory stimulation, listening to a auditory tone as it moves to the left and then right. By stimulating the brain in this way we are able to open up new neural pathways, of communication highways, inside of the brain. This allows a client to reprocess events with new clarity and less of an emotional reaction than other methodologies.

It has been shown to treat various mental conditions (anxiety, grief, depression and trauma to name a few) with a high degree of success. It is important to understand that EMDR is not a one-size-fits-all solution. While it is extremely effective in treating  some areas, other situations may call for different interventions.

What is IFS and how is it different from other Therapy?

Internal Family Systems therapy, or IFS, is a very different approach than what people have experienced with “talk therapy”. IFS operates with the understanding that we, as individuals, are made up of a lot of distinct parts. These parts are born out of the different experiences we have gone through. They are unique to each other and all have different things they are trying to accomplish. Some times their job is to protect us, while other times their job may be to get us away from painful reminders or events. With IFS we teach you how to connect to each of these individual parts and learn what they need, and why they may act the way they do.

It sounds a little weird and out there, but it is the reality of what our consciousness is actually like. I always encourage people to ask questions and watch videos or listen to podcasts that talk about it. While it may be confusing at first it winds up being very effective. Instead of trying to brute force change, we instead work to give these parts what they need so that they become ready and willing to change.

If just talking about your problems has not brought you real peace and change in your life, then this approach may be a great fit for your needs.

Are you in-network with insurance providers?

I am currently In-Network with Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Behavioral Health, Optum, Oscar, and TriEast Humana. I am also a Community Care Provider with the VA allowing Veterans to see me through their VA benefits, though they will need a referral through the VA first. Feel free to reach out to me about how to get that process moving.

I can work with Out-of-Network benefits by providing a Superbill at the end of each month. I also am able to provide a sliding scale for session rates based off of need. Before thinking you can’t afford therapy please give me a call. You may be surprised at the end result.

What are your fees?

My current fee breakdown is as follows:

Free initial consultation (30 mins) – First session will always be free to make sure we are a good fit.

45 min session – $175

60 min session – 200

Extended 90 min session – 275

I am able to offer a sliding scale on a limited basis. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me even if you do not believe you can afford it.

I have only ever done EMDR in face-to-face sessions. Is it possible to do EMDR over a virtual platform?

While there are certainly advantages to doing EMDR face-to-face it is still equally effective to be able to utilize it over a virtual platform. I utilize a service called RemotEMDR, that allows use to provide Bilateral Stimulation through Telehealth.
